CMS Covid Plan

The CMS COVID-19 can be found at the link below.   This plan will change as updates become available.  Updates from the public health department, the governor’s office, the state board of education, and/or the ICSD board of education will override this plan.  This plan will be available on our website and all changes to this plan will be highlighted within the document in green.

Welcome Back Email

We are so excited for the first day of school next Tuesday.  We can’t wait to see your students!  Our students and parents may be experiencing both excitement and nervousness at the same time.  This is normal after being out of school for so long.  In an effort to help ease some of the anxiety and help students understand the new procedures put in place for COVID we have made a quick video for you to watch with your student prior to the first day of school (see link in checklist below).  We hope this will help them understand what to expect prior to arriving or getting on the bus that first day. Please note the class schedule the first and second days of school will be slightly different to allow time for chromebook handouts. Starting and dismissal times remain the same. You will receive a Remind notification with the schedule for these two days on Monday. If you haven’t signed up for Remind please do so by texting @cedarmidd to the number 81010.Since there is so much that is new this year we have made a checklist for parents to complete prior to their students arriving the first day at CMS.  We hope this helps keep things clear and organized.  We so appreciate our parents and guardians and we know that we are asking a lot more of you this year.  Thank you for all that you do at home to keep all of us safe and healthy!Just a reminder that if you are seeking a mask exemption for your student you must hold a meeting or have a conversation with Mrs. Murray prior to the first day. Please know that the generic forms printed off the internet will not serve as a recognized mask exemption form. You must have a signed note from your doctor stating the student cannot wear a mask based on a health condition or a disability that qualifies for an IEP/504 as well as a meeting with Mrs. Murray so the student can be given their exemption pass. Students not wearing masks the first day will be given one and will be expected to wear it as per the state mandate. As stated in a previous email – please do not put us or your student in the middle of something out of our control that first day. We ask that you work with us as team members of our CMS school community. As always if you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to ask. Our doors are always open.

Dual Immersion Information and Online Dual Immersion Options

You are receiving this email because you have a student enrolled in Dual Immersion at Cedar Middle School.  We are so excited to start the 2020-2021 school year in our Dual Immersion program.  Our teachers have been working hard to prepare for the students and I know the students are ready to come back. Our Dual Immersion teachers are hopefully taking a much deserved weekend off.  Due to this the Spanish translation of this email will be coming tomorrow. Unfortunately my Spanish skills are not good and my translator app is not always reliable. (Es de esperar que nuestros maestros de inmersión dual se estén tomando un fin de semana muy merecido. Debido a esto, la traducción al español de este correo electrónico llegará mañana. Desafortunadamente, mis conocimientos de español no son buenos y mi aplicación de traductor no siempre es confiable.)We have a few changes this year that we want all Dual Immersion parents and students to be aware of prior to the year starting:

  • New Teacher 7th and 8th Grade Teacher – We were sad to see Mrs. Gimenez leave our program but wish her the best of luck back in Spain.  We would like to welcome Mrs. Sandra Overbey as our 7th and 8th grade Dual Immersion teacher.  I have attached an introduction letter from Mrs. Overbey so that you can get to know her a little before the first day.  Mrs. Overbey will do an amazing job and we are excited to welcome her to the CMS Dual Immersion family.
  • 6th Grade Teacher – Mrs. Barrio will be returning to us this year.  We are so excited and relieved that she was able to come back from her summer in Spain to start the year in person with our students.  Thank goodness for the delayed start this year or this would not have been possible.
  • New Classrooms – Due to growth at CMS we have added two more portable classrooms to the south of the building.  These are beautiful classrooms with extra storage and a quieter environment that will serve our Dual Immersion students and teachers well.  There are four portable classrooms and two will hold Dual while the other two will hold our other World Language teachers.  This will help tremendously with collaboration.  Unfortunately, the new classrooms for Dual are just a week or two shy of being completed enough to hold class in at this point.  We will be starting class with 6th grade Dual Immersion in the library and 7th and 8th grade on the stage in the lunchroom.
  • Blended Learning – All of the teachers at CMS have worked to develop a better base of understanding for blended learning in the event that we have to go online again (we are staying positive and saying this won’t happen but we want to be prepared just in case).  Last year all of us were thrown in with no warning and we were in survival mode.  If we do have to go online again please know that our teachers have put much thought and effort into making this experience better and more beneficial for their students.

Thank you for always being so great to work with as parents and students!  We are excited for the upcoming year and we look forward to seeing you soon.If you are choosing to attend school online this year please continue reading below for more information on what opportunities your students will have to continue Dual Immersion with CMS.  Please note – If you have a 6th grade student enrolled at MyTech they will not be allowed to participate in either option below as MyTech does not allow 6th grade students to take electives outside of the MyTech platform.  Please know this is not our choice and if you would like to be able to do Dual Immersion online at CMS you will need to contact us about other online options to make this an option. Our incredible Dual Immersion teachers have come up with a great solution for those students that are going online this year.  For these students we are excited to be able to offer two options for students to continue their studies in our Dual Immersion program:

  • Option One – Your student will come to CMS to take their Dual Immersion courses in person with parents providing transportation and we will do everything we can to ensure that the classes are close together (please note – the current state regulations only allow for two electives to be taken outside the online platform you are attending so that students are not “dual enrolled” in two schools using state funds).
  • Option Two – Your student will be enrolled in Dual Immersion courses at CMS but will be attending online through the CMS Canvas course of their enrolled period (please note – the current state regulations only allow for two electives to be taken outside the online platform you are attending so that students are not “dual enrolled” in two schools using state funds).
    • Students will be marked present each day but will be doing their work from home using the Canvas course that is associated with their class period.
    • The online students will have a one day delay in instruction due to the time needed to process the videos and upload the videos and materials into canvas.
    • Online students will be required to turn coursework into canvas for their grade and attendance verification.
    • All instruction and curriculum will be designed and delivered by our Dual Immersion teachers and questions and concerns can still be directed to them.

Note for IronOnline K-6 Students – If you have a 6th grader attending IronOnline K-6 we may be required to adjust their schedule with IronOnline to remove social studies in English as that is taught through our Dual Immersion in Spanish.  Please don’t be alarmed if you see this happen.  It has to do with the state not allowing students to be enrolled in the same content in two state funded schools (dual enrolled). Please know that due to the extra time required of the teachers to offer online options based at CMS we will not be offering this option for any course other than our Dual Immersion courses (as there isn’t an online option for Spanish Dual Immersion at this time).  Both Mrs. Barrio and Mrs. Overbey recognize the time commitment and sacrifice our Dual Immersion students have already given to the program and don’t want the students to lose ground by not being able to participate if they are doing online school this year.We are asking our online families to please let us know, by replying to this email, which option your student will be participating in for Dual Immersion this year. We ask that you let us know by Monday so that we can make the appropriate arrangements in schedules prior to the first day of school. The exception would be those parents waiting for the Spanish translation of this email. We hope this option eases your mind when it comes to your child’s continued studies in the Dual Immersion program.  Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Important IronOnline K-6 Information and Chrome Book Checkout

Welcome back to the 2020-2021 school year!  Your student is enrolled in Irononline K-6 through the Iron County School District.  Your registration has been done online and you should be receiving a welcome email within the next week, if you haven’t received one already.  Your teacher is Mrs. Lori Isom and your student will still be enrolled as a Cedar Middle School student although their schedule will look much different than it has in the past.  Your student will still be enrolled as a Cedar Middle School student.  Counseling and IEP/504 services if required will be serviced by Cedar Middle school faculty.  Please don’t hesitate to call us if there are any concerns or needs for these services. If you need a Chromebook we will be doing our online student chromebook handouts on Wednesday August 26, 2020 from 5:00-6:00 PM.  Please note – Students will not be given a device without a guardian present.  We are asking that only the guardian and student come to this event as we are trying to be able to physically distance during this time.  A parent or guardian will need to pick up the Chromebook (no one else may sign for this chromebook), sign a Chromebook contract, pay the school technology fee of $35 (if you qualify for a fee waiver at a later date this fee will be reimbursed), and accept or decline the insurance for the Chromebook.  The insurance is a yearly fee of $20.  This covers missing or broken keys, cracked screens, or accidental damage.  Negligence (such as losing it or throwing it down and breaking it) and theft will not be covered.

If you have any other elective classes you may also have a fees associated with those courses.  There are fee waivers forms available at the school you can fill out and return, if your family qualifies.  School breakfast and lunch is also available for families attending IronOnline programs through a pick up only option at CMS.  You can pick up lunch, and breakfast for the next day at the same time, starting the first day of school (August 25th) by the band room doors at 10:30.  If you participate in the school lunch program you will need to keep your account current.  Free and reduced lunch will be available as always for those that qualify.  If you plan to pick up lunch or breakfast you will need to notify the office each week by 9:00 on Monday morning so that we have these meals prepared for you at the 10:30 pickup time.Things you can do NOW to prepare for the year (these must be done for students attending at CMS AND students attending through IronOnline):

Important Information for MyTech and Harmony Education Online Students and Parents
